Notes for JONAH SCOGGINS:

The following is the testimony given by Jonah Scoggins to obtain his  military pension for service in the Revolutionary War. State of Illinois Greene County

             On this 3rd day of April 1833 personally appeared in open Court before Samuel Lockwood, Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Greene, State of Illinois, Jonah Scoggins a resident of the County and  State aforesaid, aged sixty nine years the 13th day of last October who  first being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress paper June 7th, 1832.

            That he was born in Brunswick County, Virginia, Oct. 13, 1763. That he was living in Bute Co., N. C. in the year 1778 about the middle of June, when he was drafted (or chosen by balloting) for 9 months and that  he entered the service of the United States as a private, commanded by Capt. Robert Temples, 1st Lt. Abraham Primm, Ensign Thomas Brickle and  was marched to Halifax on the South of Roanoke River, that there he was stationed about 10 weeks, his company was under the command of Major Charles Pinckney.

            That he was marched through to Kingstown on Neuse River and then he was placed under the command of Capt. Philip Taylor (a regular officer).  That he was marched to Parisburgh on Savannah River. That he then was appointed 1st. Sergeant, which office held three months, that he stayed at Parisburgh about 2 months, being placed under the command of General Sinsolu upon his arrival at that place. That he marched up Savannah River to Golphin's Mills in pursuit of the British - after that hewas marched  to Charlestown, stayed there 8 or 9 weeks, went from Charlestown to General Sinsolu's station about 20 miles distant. Went then to the mouth of Goodi Creek, stayed there until he was discharged which was on the 5thday of September 1779, but that he did not arrive at home until the 25th day of September, reckoning in the 20 days he had served 1 year, 3 monthsand some days, one year of which time he was a private and 3 months 1st

Sergeant.

            That in the fall of 1780 he was living in Johnson Co., N. C. when he volunteered and entered the service of the United States under the Command of Capt. Philip Thomas, 1st. Lt. Alexander Hobby, Major Dennis (other officers not recollected) and marched to Crop Creek against the Tories and served three months a private. That he volunteered and entered the service in Sept. 1781 commanded by Capt. John Whitley, Major Robt. Rayford and marched toward Yorktown from Johnson Co., N. C. in pursuit of Cornwallis but was discharged at the end of ten days. So this applicate claim a pension for One Year, 6 Months and 10 days service, (one year 3  months ten days as a private, 3 months as 1st. Sergeant). That he was discharged at the expiration of his first term of service aforementioned by Col.'s John Armstrong and James Thaxton who gave him a printed  discharge. That at the expiration of the 2nd term of service he was discharged by Col. Sam Smith who gave a written discharge and that the last time he was verbally discharged. That his discharges were burnt. That about 14 years ago he proved his services as a Revolutionary soldier before Benjamin Shackleford, Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Christian, Ky. by William Wallace who is now dead. That he dictated a copy of the proof to Washington City but he knows not what has become of  it - That he recollects to have seen many regular officers while he was in the service, that he was with regular troops and was commanded by regular officers as many as nine months during the first term of service, that he recollects particularly to have seen Gen. Green, Col. Paluski,

Col. Hager.

            That he cannot recollect the names of numbers of regiments he was in except one, which was the 5th regiment which he entered upon going into service the first time.

            That after the War he moved to the State of South Carolina, lived  there about 3 years, moved to Georgia, lived there 2 years, moved to N. C. lived there about 2 years then moved to Knox Co. Tenn. lived there 12 years, moved to Christian Co. Kentucky, lived there 16 years, moved to Jefferson Co. Illinois, lived there 4 years, moved to Morgan Co, Ill., lived there 2 years then moved to Greene Co., Ill. where he has lived in his present neighborhood for the last 2 years. That he is well acquainted with many persons in his present neighborhood who can certify concerning him among whom he would mention George W. , Robert Scoggins, John Van Cleve.

            That he has no documentory evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service - That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except  the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State or Territory. That he has no record of his age but  that he knows his age from what his parents and relatives have told him  to be as he has stated in this declaration.

            We, John Van Cleve a clergyman residing in the county of Greene & State of Illinois and Robert Scoggins residing in the same county and state hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Jonah Scoggins who  has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration, that we beleived him  to be sixty nine years of age that he is reputable and beleived in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion.

            And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the War Department that the afore mentioned applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he stated.

            And the said Court further certifies that it appears to them that John Van Cleve who has signed the preceeding certificate is a clergyman and a resident of the County of Greene, Illinois, and Robert Scoggins who has also signed the preceeding certificate is a resident of the same county and state, and that they are both credible persons and that this statement is entitled to credit.

1885 History of Greene Co IL

      Robert Scroggins, a native of Kentucky, the "Dark and Bloody Ground," came to Greene county in 1828, and located on Sec. 13, T. 9, R. 13, now included within the limits of Woodville township, where he lived several years. He then removed to a farm in Carrollton township, now owned by the heirs of Peter Hobson. While living at this place, during a  severe thunderstorm, the house in which he and his family resided, was  struck by lightning, and three of his children killed, and his wife  severely burned, and rendered for a time insensible. From there he

removed to Kane township, where he lived four years, and then left the county, going to the American Bottom.
