Notes for JACOB GREEN, SR.:

The Greenfield Argus May 30, 1919

Jacob Green was born in Applesheim, Darmstadt, Germany, January 13, 1837, and died at his home in Greenfield, May 26, 1919, following a three weeks' illness, aged 82 years, 4 months and 13 days.   He immigrated to America in 1854 and in 1861 volunteered to defend the flag of his adopted country. He was a veteran volunteer of the 61st  Illinois volunteer infantry, Company B, and was with them in the battles of Corinth, Shiloh, Murphyeesboro and other mighty conflicts of the Civil War. He was wounded and lay by in a field hospital, yet when his wound was sufficiently healed he was on duty again and ready for orders. The writer read on the reverse side of a photograph of his captain these words:

"To his old friend and comrade, Co B, 61st Illinois veteran

volunteers: As good a soldier as ever shouldered a musket:               one who was always ready for a fight: on duty from 1861 to                1865. This photograph is sent in remembrance of his fidelity           and loyalty to his friend and captain of long ago. S. T. Carrico."

Deceased was married to Christiana Meng in September, 1866. To this union were born seven children. The wife and two daughters, Elizabeth and Emma, preceded him in death. Those that are living are John, Mrs. Louisa Murray, Charles and Phillip, all of Greenfield and Jacob, of Tracy, Minn.   There are 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  Deceased was a member of the German Evangelical church, being confirmed according to the ritual of that church in 1851. He had been a respected citizen of this city for many years.  So passes another member of the G. A. R. Another mound awaits the garlands of love and devotion on Decoration day. All honor to the brave men who carried our banner to the ends of the earth. Let us keep green their graves and bright the memory of their heroic sacrifices in keeping unsullied the banner of a great and free nation, the insignia of their unwavering patriotism.   Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon by Rev. W. W. Henry and the interment was in the Oakwood cemetery under the auspices of the G. A. R., of which he had been a devoted and faithful member for many years.

Notes for CHRISTINA MENG:

The Greenfield Argus March 29, 1912

Mrs. Jacob Green, one of Greenfield's well known German residents,

died at her home in the western part of Greenfield, on Saturday, March 23, 1912, at 2 p. m., after an extended illness, aged seventy years, five months and tweenty- four days.  Her maiden name was Christiana Meng, she having been born September 29, 1841, in Kaelberfield, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Germany. In May, 1863, at the request of her brother, Fred Meng, she, in company with her two  youngest brothers, George and Charles Meng, left Germany and came to

America, arriving at the home of their brother in August of the same  year, they having been on board ship fifty-three days in crossing the Atlantic ocean. She kept house for her brother, Fred Meng, who then lived 7 1/2 miles east of Greenfield, near the old Bethel church. In 1866 she  was married to Jacob Green. They lived on a farm west of Greenfield until the spring of 1871, when they removed to Greenfield where they have ever since resided. Seven children were born of this union, four boys and  three girls, all of whom are living except the youngest daughter, Lizzie, who died at the age of ten years. Mrs. Green is survived by her husband, four sons, John, Charles, Phillip, and Jacob, Jr., all of this city, two daughters, Mrs. Louisa Murray, of this city, and Mrs. Emma Juergens, of  St. Louis, four brothers, Fred and Charles Meng, of this city, Christ

Meng, of Gardner, Kan., and George Meng, of Paola, Kan., and one sister,  Ernstine Hartmann, still back in Germany. Eleven years ago Mrs. Green and two of her brothers, Fred and Christ Meng, journeyed back to the  Faderland to vist her sister and other acquaintances of their childhood  days.

Mrs. Green was a hard working woman, industrious and economical, and had always enjoyed most vigorous health until she lost her youngest daughter, which seems to have shattered her strong constitution. She had suffered from neuralgia for twenty years and growing worse she was forcedto abandon hard work several years ago. A complication of diseases set  in, which caused her great suffering during the latter part of her life, but Death came and released her from her bed of pain. The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church in Germany, but never united with any church in this country.

Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church by Rev.

 N. V. Andrews on Monday, March 25, at 2 p. m. the interment was in the

North cemetery.

Notes for CHARLES CHARLEY GREEN:

The Greenfield Argus Aug. 22, 1930

Charles Green, who has been living alone in the old Green homestead in the western part of the city for a number of years, was found dead on the floor of his home Wednesday evening by Harry Hammack, who had gone there on an errand. It was at first thought that he was a victim of heart trouble with which he had been troubled for some  time, but a note was found which said that he was tired of living in hell with no friends, so it became evident that  he had taken his own life on the previous day, using strychnine to accomplish his sucicidal intentions, which  facts were substantiated at the coroner's inquest held several hours later.

The deceased was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Green and was aged 60 years and five months, having  spent his entire life in this city. He had never married  and since the death of his mother had lived alone in the  old family homestead. He had been suffering from heart  trouble for several years and this condition may have  caused his depression and resulted in the taking of his  life. [Loftis.FTW]

Notes for PHILLIP BURL GREEN:

The Greenfield Argus

Four children in the home of Phillip Green were stricken with diphtheria last week, which caused much uneasiness among our people. Some of these children had been attending school days previous, and it was feared that the infection might spread, so the board of education dismissed two of the lower

rooms on Friday last and disinfected them, but as so many of the pupils were kept at home it was thought best to close all the rooms except the high school for a week, which was done by an order of the board Monday night. Edith, the

eight-year-old daughter of Mr. Green, died on Monday from the effects of the contagion, but the other children are making satisfactory progress towards recovery, and as no cases have developed it is hoped the contagion will not give any further trouble.

He married Norah Ann Scoggins Green, daughter of William Frances Marion

Scoggins and Sarah Frances McCants Harrison Scoggins, 1899. Born, 13 Mar 1877, in Greenfield, Greene Co IL. Died, 14 Dec 1917, in Greenfield, Greene Co IL (Death Cer Reg #B-3 p.475 Greene Co Il). Burial: 15 Dec 1917, in Oak Wood Cem, Greenfield IL.

Nora A. Scoggins was born in this city March 13, 1877. She was married to Phillip Green in 1899. Her death occurred December 14, 1917, aged 40 years, 9 months and 1 day. One child died at the age of eight years, the other in infancy. Besides her husband and children she leaves to morn her departure her mother and six brothers and one sister, Samuel, Harry and Rollin Scoggins, of Granite City, Oscar, of Palmyra, Luther and Eugene, of Greenfield, and Mrs. Clara Witt, of this vicinity.
