Names were spelled the way they sounded to the census taker. The German accent obviously created problems for some. On the 1850 census,, Dieter's name is spelled "Deeder". His wife is listed as Josephine and her name actually was "Jacobena"

DIETER DAMM, deceased, was born in 1814, in Monzernheim, Germany, his parents being Michael and Elizabeth (Weifenbach) Damm. He bade adieu to the fatherland and friends in 1839, and took passage for America. Upon coming to this country he settled on the Thomas Black farm, in Carrollton township, where he worked until 1841. Three years later he bought 80 acres on section 11, Linder township, where he resided until his death, which occurred Dec. 4, 1879. He was united in marriage Sept. 13, 1839, with Bena Winters, a native of Germany. They were the parents of eight children - Paul C., died in infancy; John L., died in 1878; Christian; Catherine, widow of Jacob Rathgeber, now living with her mother; Dieter; Bena, wife of Charles Fischer; and Albert, who died in infancy. His widow is a member of the Presbyterian church, as was he also, during his life. At his death he was the owner of 160 acres of land.

DAMM, MRS. SARAH, Sec. 31, P. O. Berdan, was born in Alton, Sept. 16, 1847, if the fifth child of Elias and Sarah Meister. On Dec. 7, 1865, was married to John Damm, who was a native of this county. As a result of this union, they have had four children, viz: Sarah Jane, born Sept. 8, 1866; John, Oct. 30, 1867; Annie, Oct. 7, 1869; Deater, June 22, 1871. Mrs. Damm is now a widow, her husband having met with a tragical death at his own hands, July 2, 1878. She resides at present with her parents, having rented her farm, consisting of 94 acres, which she intends keeping for the benefit of herself and children, that they may be educated and fitted for the coming duties of life.

DAMM, CHRISTIAN, farmer, Sec. 9, P. O. Carrollton, is a native of this county, born Jan. 21, 1844; is a son of Deiter and Bena D., who were born in Mozenheim, Canton Osthoven, Hesse-Darmstadt; they emigrated to his county in 1838. Deiter first worked out by the month for Thomas Black, near Carrollton. Subsequent to this rented land of L. Curtis, and after several years of hard labor, saved money enough to make a purchase of the land he now resides upon - Sec. 11. Town 10, range 11. There are four children - Christan, Kate, Deiter, and Bena. Christian, the subject of this sketch, remained at home until he attained his majority; April 12, 1865, was united in marriage to Margaret Rathgeber, born in Ipplesheim, Christ Wurms, Hesse-Darmstadt. She came with her parents to this county in 1848. After their marriage, he engaged in farming on his father's place, remaining there five years. In 1869, he bought 120 acres, where he now resides, it being the Adam Rathgeber farm; since which time he has been engaged in agricultural pursuits. They have three children - two boys and one girl - Katie, born June 8, 1866; Christian, born Nov. 6, 1869; Phillip, born Nov. 23, 1872. Mr. Damm is a man of industrious habits, and has a keen eye to business affairs; and he is also one of the most highly respected citizens of the neighborhood.

CHRISTIAN DAMM, was born in Greene county, Ill., Jan. 21, 1844, his parents being Dieter and Bena J. (Winters) Dann. Christian was married April 12, 1865, to Margaret Rathgeber, a native of Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Damm have been the parents of six children - Catherine; George, deceased; Christian, Philip, Maggie and Ellen. Mr. Damm is a member of the I.O.O.F., and in politics, he is a republican.

DIETER DAMM, son of Dieter, Sr., was born in Greene county, Ill., in 1851. He was reared on a farm, and received his education in the district schools. In 1870, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Meister, a native of this county. Their union has been blessed with six children - Elizabeth, Dieter, Bena, Catherine, Elias and Mary, who are all attending school. Dieter farms 160 acres of the homestead, and carries on general farming. He also runs a cider mill, making cider for customers. He is a member of the Presbyterian church. Dieter is a pleasant gentleman, and is bound to leave a favorable opinion with all whom he comes in contact with.

The family has changed the spelling of the name over the years. Some took the "Damm" spelling; some took the "Daum" spelling; and some may have kept the "Dahm" spelling. I have verbal family reports that Elias's generation began using "Daum" around 1900. My grandfather's official records reflect "Daum", but he preferred the "Damm" spelling. Apparently they held a family meeting and took a vote regarding the spelling of the name. Obviously, Elias kept the "Damm" spelling.
